Red Winged Black Birds

The above was shot with my 1D and is minimally cropped from the top and left.  The photo below was shot with the Rebel and is HEAVILY cropped.  I'm definitely ready for a camera with more megapixels.

Love it when the red wing blackbirds come back! I heard one tonight and immediately recognized it's call, sure enough it flew up in a bush where I could see it. I didn't see any females, just two males.... they'll be building nests soon.

I like photographing them because they're less skittish than other birds and they stay pretty active with they're calling.

Sweet captures! I can't wait for the Red-wing black birds to return! They are such characters!

Less skittish, no kidding. Those birds will try to peck your eyes out if you run too close to their nests. Okay maybe I'm being a bit dramatic...but they will dive-bomb you!! Surely you've had that happen out on Lister or in French Creek? Even if these are not my favorite birds, your shots are great. I especially like the first one.

I've definitely had some angry birds at French Creek but I can't remember it ever happening on Lister. I've seen wild turkeys on Lister though and I'm not sure if I want to them coming after me.

Thanks Terri. They do have personality.

Which Rebel did you use?

Olga, it was a T1 so it's an older model.

Mat in a couple weeks try to find some reeds or cattails, they will be building their nests in those. When the babies come they are even easier to shoot as they catch bugs and flit around trying to keep you from seeing where they are hiding their babies at. They most certainly will dive bomb you if you get too close. Listen for the males, when they start screeching hysterically you are getting too close.
