Dodge and Burn

One of the things I hope to do this year is improve my photoshop skills.  I really like the look you get from using the dodge and burn tools.  A look popularized by Jill Greenberg and Dave Hill.  I have been watching some YouTube tutorials (you can learn anything on YouTube) and this was my first attempt.  See the unedited file below.

My 365 Project said...

Hi Matt I really like the effect on his shirt. This is my 2nd year to do a 365 project, it pushes me to shoot when I might not othewise.... which I think is good.

You just need to be careful with dodge or burn - don't overuse or it looks artificial. (I learned my skills in a physical darkroom and then spent two decades as a graphic artist for a magazine publisher so had to use Photoshop extensively. Much of what I had to do was routine but some of the stuff ... well I could write a book! LOL!)

I did my first from May 2011 - April 2012 and then took a break until the first of the year. You are right on about the project pushing you to shoot when you might not otherwise.

It will take some practice but I love the way it looks when it's done right.
I also used to dodge and burn under a red light with the smell of Dektol in the air. It was cool to see the image emerge in the tray but other than that I don't miss those days.

I kinda do ... I loved working in the darkroom. Unfortunately once my kids were born, the darkroom work and my photography got pushed aside. They are adults now (and my son has kids of his own) so I am getting back to serious photography after a 30 year break. :-)

Megs - When you are in your home screen (http://www.blogger.com/home) there is a button on the left hand side "New Blog".

So I type in a new blog name.? And link them after? Thanks...I did open that up but then wasn't sure if it created a whole new address and everything or if it linked them.
